Last Wednesday, Walrus Comix was in the house to attend the book signing for Dean Haspiel and Michel Fiffe’s 1st issue of Brawl. It was held at Jim Hanley’s Universe on 33rd street and it was very cool to see the books all printed up and shiny new. Also in attendance were Mike Cavallaro, Tim Hamilton and Bob Fingerman.

We chatted a bit with all the boys, took some photos and perused their great work.

We spoke to Mike Cavallaro briefly about his thoughts on webcomics, and his experience working on his fantastic comic ‘Parade With Fireworks’ which he had on display. He told us he appreciated the immediacy of webcomics, and how as a result of working in that medium, he had simplified his style for ‘Parade’ in order to produce at a faster rate. We think this style works so perfectly with the telling of the story, and he agreed saying that he thought he might utilize it on future work.

Mike hooked up with Act-I-Vate through Tim Hamilton, who was also there. They had originally met as they both had worked for Puffin adapting classic novels in graphic novel form. Mike had on display his adaptation of ‘The Wizard of Oz’, which was very cool!

Tim Hamilton is an incredible artist who we hope to interview in the near future. Tim had some work on display as well. The book that particularly caught our eye was his adaptation of Treasure Island for Puffin Classics. It was pretty mind blowing, totally looked like a new Eisner to us.

Bob Fingerman was there signing autograph copies of his novel Bottom Feeder as well as ‘Beg The Question’ and ‘Guilty Pancake’

Dino and Michel looked as pleased as punch (as well they should be) and were busy signing and drawing up a storm. There’s lots of stuff coming up for both the guys, including issues 2-3 of Brawl, Dino’s ‘The Alcoholic’ and Michel’s ‘Panorama’ being included in an upcoming compilation from Image Comics.

As we were about to leave, none other than Simon Fraser popped in to say hi. As you know Simon was one of our first interviews, so it was great to say hello and catch up a bit.

Left feeling happy, a great time had by all. We really hope you all check out all these guy’s stuff, it’s brilliant.
